School zone speed cameras have rapidly expanded across Florida in recent months, and nowhere is the impact more visible than in Miami Dade County. What began as a public safety initiative has quickly transformed into one of the most aggressive automated enforcement rollouts in the state.
According to recent data analyzed by The Ticket Clinic, last week alone 61 percent of all speeding tickets in Miami Dade were issued by school zone cameras. The numbers are significant, and they raise serious financial and legal questions for drivers across the county.
School Zone Speed Cameras Are Expanding Across Florida
Throughout 2025, cities across Florida have activated school zone camera programs at an unprecedented pace. Municipalities in Miami Dade have joined dozens of other Florida jurisdictions that now rely on automated enforcement rather than traditional traffic stops. Our firm has been mapping and tracking the growth of these programs here.
Supporters argue that cameras increase compliance in school zones and improve child safety. However, critics point out that many of these systems operate with minimal officer oversight and rely heavily on private vendors to administer and process violations.
The rapid deployment over the past month in Miami Dade has made one thing clear. Automated enforcement is no longer a small pilot program. It is a major driver of citation volume.
Miami Dade Speeding Tickets Increased 159 Percent In 2025
Statewide data from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles shows that Miami Dade experienced a staggering 159 percent increase in speeding tickets in 2025 compared to the prior year. Click here to read our in depth report of 2025’s traffic ticket data.
We knew school zone cameras were playing a role in this dramatic increase. What was unclear was just how much of the surge could be directly attributed to camera enforcement.
To better understand the impact, we analyzed last week’s citation data from Miami Dade County.
The Numbers From Last Week Tell The Story
Last week, Miami Dade County issued 13,488 moving violations across all municipalities.
Of those violations:
5,401 were issued for speeding related offenses
3,285 of those speeding citations were issued by school zone cameras
That means 61 percent of all speeding tickets last week were camera generated
- Drivers in Miami are about 2X more likely to get a speeding ticket from a camera than from an actual police officer. Or 10X more likely to get a speeding ticket from a camera in a school zone than from a uniformed officer.
This is not a marginal increase. It is a fundamental shift in how speeding enforcement is being carried out.
The Financial Impact On The Community
If every one of those 3,285 camera tickets were simply paid at face value, that would generate approximately 328,500 dollars in a single week.
Publicly available agreements between cities and camera vendors show that 21 dollars per ticket goes directly to the camera company.
Using last week’s data:
3,285 camera tickets multiplied by 21 dollars equals approximately 68,985 dollars
That amount leaves the local community and goes directly to private camera operators
Many of these camera companies are owned by Wall Street private equity firms or offshore interests. Based on the current weekly pace, somewhere in the ballpark of 3.8 million dollars could leave Miami Dade County over the course of a year.
Unfortunately, these numbers are likely to grow. More municipalities in Miami and throughout Florida are activating camera programs in 2026. As additional systems come online, citation volume and revenue are expected to increase.
Controversy Surrounding School Zone Camera Programs
School zone camera programs have generated significant controversy across Florida.
Drivers frequently report receiving tickets for marginal speed differences. Others question the accuracy of calibration and timing. There are also concerns about whether cameras are active during appropriate school hours and whether signage is sufficiently visible.
From a legal standpoint, automated enforcement removes the officer from the roadside interaction. There is no immediate warning, no discretionary reduction, and no opportunity for the driver to clarify circumstances in real time.
Ethically, critics argue that when a portion of every fine is contractually routed to a private company, it creates an incentive structure that prioritizes volume over fairness.
What This Means For Drivers In Miami Dade
The dramatic increase in Miami Dade speeding tickets is not a coincidence. It is directly tied to the expansion of automated school zone enforcement.
With 61 percent of last week’s speeding citations issued by camera, drivers need to understand that enforcement patterns have fundamentally changed.
Receiving a school zone camera ticket does not automatically mean you must simply pay it. Drivers have legal options, and it is important to review the notice carefully, understand the alleged violation, and evaluate whether the citation was properly issued.
