Over 4,000 Florida Super Speeder Arrests in Just One Year: What the New Data Reveals

July 10, 2026

Florida’s new Super Speeder law has led to more than 4,000 arrests statewide in its first year, according to newly released data from the Florida Highway Patrol. The numbers offer the clearest picture yet of how aggressively the law is being enforced, and they serve as a reminder that extreme speeding in Florida is now a criminal offense that can result in arrest and jail time.

If you’re accused of driving at extremely high speeds, you’re no longer looking at just a traffic ticket. You could be handcuffed on the roadside, booked into jail, and required to appear in criminal court.

Florida’s Super Speeder Law Explained

Florida’s Dangerous Excessive Speeding law (commonly called the Super Speeder law) took effect on July 1, 2025.

Under the law, drivers can be arrested if they are accused of:

  • Driving 100 mph or faster, regardless of the posted speed limit.
  • Driving 50 mph or more over the posted speed limit.

Unlike most speeding violations, these offenses are criminal misdemeanors rather than civil traffic infractions.

More Than 4,000 Arrests Statewide

According to data released by the Florida Highway Patrol covering the law’s first 12 months:

  • More than 4,000 drivers were arrested statewide
  • More than 2,700 arrests involved drivers accused of traveling over 100 mph
  • More than 1,400 arrests involved drivers accused of traveling 50 mph or more above the posted speed limit

Those numbers only include arrests made by the Florida Highway Patrol. Additional arrests made by county sheriff’s offices and municipal police departments mean the total number of Super Speeder cases statewide is likely even higher.

Orange County Leads With Hundreds of Arrests

Central Florida has emerged as one of the busiest enforcement areas.

According to the newly released data:

  • More than 500 FHP Super Speeder arrests occurred in Orange County.
  • The Orange County Sheriff’s Office separately reported 323 additional arrests under the law.
  • The fastest speed recorded by deputies was 150 mph.
  • Approximately one out of every six drivers arrested was allegedly traveling at 120 mph or faster.

These numbers highlight how frequently law enforcement agencies are using the statute.

Why the Numbers Matter

When lawmakers passed the legislation, the stated goal was to reduce dangerous high-speed driving before it resulted in serious crashes or fatalities.

Florida Highway Patrol officials say that despite public awareness campaigns, drivers continue to be arrested at similar rates one year after the law took effect.

Whether the law ultimately changes long-term driving behavior remains to be seen, but enforcement has clearly become a statewide priority.

What Happens If You’re Arrested?

Many drivers are surprised to learn that a Super Speeder stop doesn’t end with a citation.

Instead, officers can:

  • Place the driver under arrest
  • Transport them to jail
  • Tow the vehicle
  • Require the driver to appear in criminal court

A first offense may carry:

  • Up to 30 days in jail
  • A fine of up to $500
  • Or both

Subsequent convictions can result in:

  • Up to 90 days in jail
  • Up to $1,000 in fines
  • Possible driver’s license suspension or revocation in certain circumstances.

Because every case is different, the outcome can depend on the facts of the stop, the driver’s history, and how prosecutors choose to handle the case.

The Bottom Line

One year after Florida’s Super Speeder law took effect, the numbers show that enforcement is widespread.

With more than 4,000 arrests statewide and hundreds more occurring in counties like Orange, Florida drivers should understand that excessive speeding is no longer treated like an ordinary traffic ticket. Instead, it can lead to arrest, criminal prosecution, and potentially significant penalties.

If you are facing a Super Speeder charge or any other Florida traffic-related criminal offense, it’s important to understand your legal options as early as possible. Call for a free consultation.
