Four hours. That is an entire evening, half a workday, or a good chunk of your weekend.
If you received a Florida traffic ticket, you may be considering a four-hour traffic school course to keep points off your license. For eligible drivers, that can be a sensible choice. But before you pay the ticket and sign up, consider what you are spending beyond the course fee.
You are committing your time, using a limited option, and choosing how to resolve your ticket before an attorney has reviewed it.
There may be another approach worth considering.
Florida Traffic School Can Help You Avoid Points
Florida’s four-hour Basic Driver Improvement course, often called BDI or traffic school, gives eligible drivers a way to avoid points associated with certain noncriminal moving violations.
You must properly elect the traffic school option and complete the required steps. Simply purchasing an online course does not take care of your ticket. Florida generally requires you to make the election within 30 days of receiving the citation. You must also follow the clerk’s instructions and completion deadline.
For someone who qualifies, understands the costs, and is comfortable setting aside four hours, traffic school can be a practical solution.
But it deserves more thought than clicking “pay” and hoping everything works out.
You Have a Limited Number of Traffic School Elections
Traffic school is not an unlimited reset button.
Under Florida’s current statute, you generally cannot voluntarily elect this option if you have already made an election within the preceding 12 months. You are also limited to eight elections during your lifetime. Eligibility restrictions apply, including restrictions involving commercial license holders and certain violations.
That makes each election worth considering carefully.
Using traffic school today could mean the option is unavailable if you receive another eligible ticket in the next several months. Before using one of your elections, it makes sense to understand whether contesting the ticket could be a reasonable alternative.
Four Hours of Traffic School Can Feel Like a Very Long Evening
Let’s be honest: reviewing traffic rules is probably not how you wanted to spend your free time.
You have already spent the day working, handling errands, or taking care of your family. Now you get to sit through lessons about following distances, intersections, and defensive driving.
The information has a purpose. That does not make the experience exciting.
For many drivers, traffic school is boring. Really boring. The kind of boring where you check the clock, finish another section, and discover that far less time has passed than you hoped.
Taking the course online may save you a trip to a classroom, but it still means setting aside time for a four-hour program.
Online Does Not Mean You Can Just Walk Away
Do not assume an online course means opening a browser tab and coming back later for a certificate.
Depending on the provider, courses may use timed sections, review questions, and identity checks. These measures help establish that the registered student is participating and completing the work. Some providers specifically describe identity verification questions and minimum section timers in their course instructions. Requirements vary by course.
In other words, plan to participate. Having someone else take the class or expecting to click through everything in a few minutes is not a legitimate shortcut.
Traffic School Has Costs Beyond Tuition
The advertised course price is only one part of the decision.
Electing traffic school generally still involves paying the applicable citation amount and court charges, as well as purchasing the course. It is an option for addressing points, rather than a dismissal of the underlying ticket.
Then there is the cost that never appears on the checkout screen: your time.
What is an evening worth to you? Would you rather spend those hours working, being with your family, or doing almost anything other than another traffic school lesson?
Before comparing prices, compare the full commitment.
Four Hours of Traffic School—or a Few Minutes to Get Started?
Getting started with The Ticket Clinic can take just a few minutes. Send a picture of your ticket, provide the necessary information, and let our team explain the next steps.
Think of it as the four-hour versus four-minute question: would you rather commit an evening to traffic school, or spend a few minutes getting help fighting the ticket?
Four minutes describes the convenience of getting started, not how long your case takes to resolve. Your attorney still needs time to review the citation and handle the court process.
For a typical speeding ticket, The Ticket Clinic’s attorney fee is about $100, depending on the case. If your ticket is dismissed, that’s the end of it; however, some cases may incur some additional court fees. Traffic school will run you about $25 + at least 4 hours of your time.
That puts the decision in perspective. For around $100 in attorney fees, you can have an attorney contest the ticket while you get on with your day.
Fighting the Ticket Gives You Another Option
Traffic school focuses on resolving an eligible citation without points. Hiring an attorney gives you an opportunity to challenge the ticket.
Your attorney can review the alleged violation, evaluate the available evidence, and pursue an appropriate defense. Depending on the case, that may lead to dismissal or another favorable resolution.
Results are not guaranteed. Some outcomes can still involve court costs, points, or traffic school, and some cases require the driver’s participation or appearance.
The benefit is having someone evaluate and handle your case before you automatically choose to pay and take a class.
